Dr. Martha L. Morgan is an Adjunct Professor, Course Developer, and Curriculum Designer for the SCA University of Theology and Spirituality.

Dr. Martha L. Morgan first studied marriage and family therapy at Oklahoma State University in 2004. She then completed her doctoral study at Texas Tech University in 2010. Her dissertation research focused on the experiences of African American graduate students attending predominately white institutions.

She was briefly exposed to Satir during her master’s program. Her journey into Satir’s work deepened during her doctoral work. While trying to determine which MFT theory would be her theoretical home she dug deeper into Satir’s work. She also saw how the application of the model helped her to help her clients and she was hooked. She met Sharon Loeschen during the ILHRN conference in San Diego in 2011.

Dr. Martha Morgan was honored to receive the opportunity to serve on the Board for Satir Global for several years. She continues stay connected through serving on the Anti-racism Committee.

Dr. Morgan has trained students to practice therapy since 2010. Her first faculty appointment was in the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program at Alliant International University, San Diego, CA. She taught both undergraduate and graduate students at John Brown University. She also taught and served as Clinic Coordinator at Mercer University, Atlanta, GA. Her current position is in the marriage and family therapy program at UMass Global (previously - Brandman University).

Her clinical works has allowed her to served underserved populations. She has worked with adults and youth in the criminal justice system. She has also served adults and children in a hospital setting. Currently she practices part-time via Telehealth for Good Human Work. She utilizes the Satir Growth Model in these setting which has allowed her to help her clients achieve their goals to improve their lives.

Dr. Martha Morgan has made profound and useful discoveries along her path. She has learned the importance of creating space for our social locations. While seeing clients in the campus-based clinic at Tech she noticed a new client would take a step back when she let them know she was their therapist. After completing the initial paperwork, she informed the client about what she had observed. They responded by saying, “I wasn’t expecting you to be Black. You didn’t sound Black on the phone.” This encounter changed the way she started therapy. From that client forward, she began discussing what she likes to call – social location disclosures. She shares with her clients those aspects of self that have an influence on how we know, see, hear, learn, and understand. She starts this way, because she believes it is important for people to know who she is and how those parts of her own identity might show up in our time together. She also encourages her students to become familiar with their own social locations and to determine how they want to acknowledge social location in the work they do with clients.

Dr. Martha Morgan’s own social location disclosure would thus be: “Here is my social location. I am Black/mixed American – my cultural background includes Black, Native American, Irish and German. I am a citizen of the United States. I am Southern Californian and I’ve had the opportunity to travel throughout the country. My current home state is Oklahoma. I am cis-female, my pronouns are she, her, hers. I am heterosexual. I am Christian. I recognize the power and pain that comes with identifying as Christian and so I oftentimes say, but not an “American Christian.” I am educated. I have earned 4 degrees and I am also the first in my family of origin to attend college. English is my first language. I am middle class, although I often worry about finances. I am mostly able-bodied. I do have an issue with my vision, although most people won’t know that by looking at me. Professionally I am a marriage and family therapist and an educator. I am also a daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and wife. All of these identities shape the way I navigate the world and will be present in our work together. My hope is that these parts of me will not get in the way of connecting and understanding you. If something does come up I also hope that we can have a conversation and do our best to mitigate the situation. I look forward to learning and growing with you.”
